*“Enzo Maresca Rips into Chelsea After Last-Gasp Defeat to Sunderland: ‘Not Good Enough’”

"Maresca Slams 'Not Good Enough' Chelsea After Dramatic Defeat to Sunderland"

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca didn’t hold back after watching his side crumble to a 2-1 defeat at home against newly-promoted Sunderland on Saturday. Despite taking an early lead through Alejandro Garnacho's maiden goal for the club, the Blues were undone by Wilson Isidor’s equaliser and Chemsdine Talbi’s dramatic last-minute winner in a heated Premier League clash.

The loss marked Chelsea’s third defeat in five league games, dropping them to ninth in the table, while Sunderland’s dream start to the 2025/26 season continued as they climbed to second — just two points off leaders Arsenal.

Speaking after the match, a visibly frustrated Maresca gave a blunt assessment of his side’s performance:

“We were not good enough in general,”* the Italian admitted. *“In the Premier League, if you drop even a little, you drop points — and that’s exactly what happened today.”

While Chelsea have impressed in Europe — with commanding wins over Benfica and Ajax — their domestic form tells a different story. They've already dropped 13 points in just nine games, and their inconsistency continues to raise concern among fans.

Asked about the impact of his substitutes, Maresca said:

*“It’s always difficult for players coming on, but at least they tried. Still, overall, we just weren’t good enough.”*

The Chelsea manager also addressed the defensive struggles against Sunderland’s aerial threat:

*“It’s tough when they pack seven or eight players in the box for long throws. We prepared for it, but sometimes it’s hard to stop.”*

Despite Garnacho’s early strike — Chelsea’s fastest goal this season — Maresca felt his side lacked the grit to match Sunderland’s intensity:

*“We started well, but it felt like we were already behind — physically, in the duels, and second balls. Against teams like this, if you’re not sharp, you’ll be punished.”*

As pressure begins to mount, Chelsea must now find consistency — or risk falling further behind in the title race.
